Book review: Ghost in the Wires My Adventures as the World's Most Wanted Hacker
As a part of my goal to start writing more for many reasons i also want to start writing review and/or small summary of what i found interesting in a specific book or series.
First the mention of Mitnick was after watching the movie "Takedown" as a watching spree for movies related to hackers. After watching "Hackers" a ton of times knowing that real hacking is not that flashy at all, but I enjoyed it every time beside that. It helps that i cant comprehend hacking my self, just having a simple knowledge about it.
In the book you find out that Kevin was driven by need for knowledge and the trill of testing out his limits. I personally think that if he was driven by greed he will probably be still in jail or even worse. What amazes me the most is that Social Engineering is a terrifying simple way to bypass any type of security. I laughed out laud for the part where he was teaching on the phone one lady how to upload to a FTP he owns, but because of IP restriction she ask her Security Supervisor for help. The fun part was that not only he sees the IP is not in the whitelist BUT gives his own username and a password for a proxy to bypass the restrictions.
In the many cases described in this book the security completly fails because he acts with confidence and information gathering. The part of the "Free Kevin" movement is also one topic I liked, because the people knew he was wrong to hack, but also that despite that he had rights. Again the part that he hacked for the thrill and not for money saved him at the end.
As a final words i think this book should be in the reading list for anyone interested in security and not only for computer security.
